Summertime Toronto
With over five million people, Toronto is Canada's largest city, perched beautifully on Lake Ontario. It's a true melting pot, where 152 languages and dialects are spoken in an atmosphere of comparative harmony. Toronto has the largest Italian community outside Italy, three Chinatowns, a Greektown and a little India, so you can choose from 5,500 restaurants of every ethnic cuisine.
The city brags two gay villages. The "old village" main drag of Church Street, with gay bars, businesses and most of the bustle between Yonge and Sherbourne Streets, is alive and well. The "west village" in Parkdale has rapidly developed an underground gay scene and international notoriety for queer and visual arts.
These warm summer days prove a perfect time to visit--Toronto now has its own official nude beach, Hanlan's Point, on Toronto Island. August brings festivals and events: Toronto Beer Festival, held at Historic Fort York; Leather Ball at The Opera House; and Church Street Fetish Fair. If these sound a little intense, there's the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. Which promises to be quality--from a town known for vibrant film production and Queer as Folk.
